How to Prepare for a Calm & Cozy Newborn Photography Session
Tips from Satin & Sage Photography – San Angelo, TX Newborn Photographer

Welcoming a new baby into your family is one of life’s sweetest moments—and capturing those early days with professional photography is a beautiful way to preserve the memories forever.

At Satin & Sage Photography, we specialize in relaxed, natural-light newborn sessions designed to be as peaceful and stress-free as possible. To help ensure the smoothest experience for you and your baby, here are a few simple tips that make all the difference.

1. Try to Keep Baby Awake Before the Session

We know how tricky this can be—but even 30–60 minutes of awake time before your session can help your baby fall into a deeper sleep once they arrive. Sleepy babies are easier to pose and settle, leading to those peaceful, curled-up shots everyone loves.

2. Feed Baby Right Before the Session

A full belly equals a happy, sleepy baby.

  • If you're breastfeeding: Feed your baby right before arriving. Be prepared to nurse again during the session as needed—we always take breaks when baby needs comfort.

  • If you're bottle-feeding: Bring a prepared bottle of milk or formula with you, even if they’ve just eaten. A little top-off can go a long way.

3. Bring Extra Diapers, Wipes & Essentials

Accidents are part of the process. Having extra diapers and wipes ensures we can quickly clean up and get back to capturing sweet moments. If your baby uses a pacifier, please bring one—it’s incredibly helpful for soothing between poses.

4. What to Bring

We provide all the props, wraps, and outfits needed for your session. However, we always welcome personal touches that make your images even more meaningful.
If you have a special article of clothing—such as something you or your spouse wore as a baby—or a family heirloom, favorite blanket, or beloved stuffed animal, feel free to bring it along. These details add a beautiful, sentimental layer to your photos and help tell your family’s unique story.

5. Why It All Matters

These small preparations go a long way in helping your baby stay calm, warm, and comfortable during the session. And when baby is happy, your photos will reflect that peace—resulting in timeless, heart-melting images you’ll cherish for years to come.

Bonus Tip: Relax and Trust the Process

We've been photographing babies for decades, and we understand their rhythms. Sessions are slow-paced, gentle, and entirely baby-led. Whether your little one needs to pause, feed, or snuggle—we take our time so you don’t feel rushed.

Ready to Book Your Newborn Session?
We recommend scheduling within your baby’s first 10 days for the sleepiest results—but we welcome newborns of all ages.
